Information on lakeshore protection
Lakeshore owners who would need to add shoreline armoring (rip rap) to their shoreline can find information and guidelines at http://www.iowadnr.gov/InsideDNR/RegulatoryLand/SovereignLandsPermits.aspx or by contacting the Iowa DNR at 712-336-1840 x116.
Emergency authority (exception to a permit) can be granted by the DNR to deal with hazardous or detrimental conditions resulting in damage to state lands and waters. Work authorized in these situations must be done under the supervision of a Department employee. Landowners will still be required to submit a sovereign lands construction application before work begins.
For work that is not an emergency, landowners should apply for a Sovereign Lands permit through the normal process. Applications can be found on the Iowa DNR website at http://www.iowadnr.gov/portals/idnr/uploads/forms/joint_application.pdf?amp;tabid=1576 or picked up in person at the Spirit Lake Hatchery.
Work that takes place above the ordinary high water mark (OHWL) does not require a permit from the Department. You can estimate the OHWL on your property after calling the DNR for a current lake level. Other local permits may be necessary for lakeshore construction.
