Burn ban lifted in Dickinson County, extreme caution still urged when burning

DICKINSON COUNTY, IOWA – At the request of the fire chiefs of Dickinson County, the Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office has lifted the burn ban that has been in place in Dickinson County since October 3. The ban is lifted effective December 5 at 9:00am.

Despite the ban being lifted, EXTREME CAUTION is still urged to anyone who plans to burn, as grasses and brush are still extremely dry. The fire chiefs request that:

  • Anyone planning to burn, check the latest weather forecast with special attention put on the wind forecast. While it may be calm at the time you light the fire, the wind can quickly come up and/or change direction. Hourly weather forecasts are available from the National Weather Service by going to www.weather.gov.
  • All open burning MUST be supervised at all times until the fire is completely extinguished. Any unattended fires reported to the Communications Center will result in the fire department being paged to put the fire out.
  • Anyone doing any open burning is asked to contact the Communications Center and notify the dispatcher of the intended burn, the location, and how long you anticipate the fire to last along with a name and phone number of who to contact regarding the fire.

The fire chiefs reserve the right to reinstate the burn ban at any time if there are problems with people burning in Dickinson County.
