| In 2002 the Dickinson
County Sheriff’s Office partnered with other local law enforcement
agencies to form the Lakes Area Warrant Service (LAWS) team. The
purpose of the team was to handle law enforcement operations which
were deemed a higher risk than regular duties performed by peace
officers. Over
the years the members of the LAWS team have trained monthly to enhance
those skills already possessed and to learn new skills that would be
valuable in a high risk law enforcement operation. The LAWS team has
been called upon several times to carryout those duties.
In July of 2006 members
of the LAWS team merged with members of another area team known as the
Multi Agency Response Team (MART). MART is comprised of members from
the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office,
Emmetsburg Police Department, Emmet County Conservation, and Palo Alto
County Conservation. With the addition of the former LAWS members,
which includes the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Okoboji
Police Department, to its team MART has increased manpower and
equipment to call upon in the event of a high risk law enforcement
operation.
As a result of the
merger between LAWS and MART citizens of Dickinson County have a
valuable asset that is ready, willing, and able to handle most any
high risk event.
